Holly Pester’s Planula Tales is the second manifestation of a series of commissions in which artists have been invited to haunt Rhubaba.

Holly will carry out a series of three short readings over three evenings. Each reading will be from a work of experimental verse fiction, telling the tale of a ghost living on the seabed. Each composition will attempt to voice subject positions of waste, rather than body; of plotting from the seabed, rather than mapping the sea voyage; a poetics of abortion rather than creation.

Each reading can be heard exclusive of the others, or in a series to make a larger whole.

There’s a ghost in my house is a programme of commissions in which Rhubaba invited artists Sarah Boulton, Holly Pester and Áine O’Dwyer to investigate the notion of ‘haunting’ culturally and conceptually, and occupy Rhubaba in ways that might be unexpected, unsettling or uncanny.

Artist Nazia Mohammad was invited to make a sound work using recordings of the readings. Planula Reverie, the resulting work, is an immersive world that draws out the materiality of the words, created to be listened to whilst lying down under a blanket. It can be accessed using the player at the top of the page, or as a free download by clicking on the link to Bandcamp to the right of the player.

Holly Pester is a poet, writer and researcher. Her recent projects include go to reception and ask for Sara in red felt tip, a response to the history and function of the Women’s Art Library and Common Rest, a multimedia, collaborative work consisting of a 10-inch vinyl with an accompanying book of poems, in which ideas associated with lullabies form the basis for improvisation. Nazia Mohammad is an Edinburgh-based artist who is currently interested in creating through her work a reductive language using materials, shapes and sounds which touch on Sufi concepts such as the divine feminine and a higher self.
