+ Screening of Lace; Rope; and Thread, a sequence of short films by Roberta Jean.
Rhubaba is delighted to present three short films by Roberta Jean, a choreographer, director, singer and teacher. Jean synthesises these roles and works collaboratively with artists and makers from across disciplines to produce dances for performance and film. This film series is a poetic response to historical and contemporary notions of craft and physical work. Born out of a desire to explore the alchemy that occurs when movement and sound are combined, this work arose from a period of experimentation and practice, with an ensemble of female contemporary dancers and sound-based practitioners
Lace; Rope; and Thread are a sequence of films that form a screen version of Roberta’s critically acclaimed live work, Brocade. Lace was shot on location at MYB Textiles in Ayrshire, the only producer in the world to still manufacture patterned lace with original Nottingham Lace Looms. Here, human movements align and juxtapose with the choreography and soundtrack of the machines and voice. Rope features Welsh violinist Angharad Davies, her approach to sound involves attentive listening and exploration beyond the sonic confines of her instrument, her classical training and performance expectation. Thread features long term collaborator, Stephanie McMann, Helka Kaski and Kirsty Arnold and incorporates Roberta Jean’s work as a vocalist.
The screening will be on loop throughout the market
