Late Screenings: The Body of a Poet: A Tribute to Audre Lorde

Friday 14th May 6pm (BST)

Available for 48hrs - to Sunday 16th 6pm (BST)

Runtime: 29 mins

Rhubaba is delighted to present the first film in our Late Screenings programme for 2021. For this installment, we will be showing The Body of a Poet: A Tribute to Audre Lorde by Sonali Fernando (1995).

In this film, Fernando creates an imaginary re-telling of Audre Lorde. Centred around a group of Black lesbian female poets who provide voiceover and dramatizations throughout, the film celebrates the life and work of the self described ‘black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet’.

Black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet are the words that visionary poet and activist Audre Lorde selected for self description. In this short film Fernando explores an imaginary re-telling of Lordes’ life, devised alongside a group of black lesbian female poets at centre. The stylised tribute of The Body of a Poet: A Tribute to Audre Lorde traces and celebrates the desires and memories which Lorde’s poetry invites.

This film has been selected and is being shown as part of our multidisciplinary project exploring the work of Scottish Ghanian artist, Maud Sulter. Rhubaba’s work, and this project is intentionally slow burning; creating connections between Black artists/writers/researchers (whether they have a practice or not) in Scotland, or who have connections to Scotland. Through our screenings, projects, and workshops we explore methods of braiding knowledge, networks and locations.

This event is free and will be available to view on our website for 48 hours from Friday 14th 6PM BST.
